Where our numbers come from. Every number in the app shows its source next to it. These are the people and documents behind them.
Steel data
Larrin Thomas, Knife Steel NerdsToughness figures, heat treat steps for MagnaCut, AEB-L, Nitro-V and 80CrV2, and which-steel-for-which-job guidance come from Larrin Thomas’s published work, used with his permission. The words and charts in the app are ours. Credit doesn’t mean he reviewed or endorses Knife Plan.
Heat treat steps
Each steel’s heat treat steps come from its published sheet. They’re a starting point; your kiln and thickness change them.
Patterns
Our starter patterns are classic shapes that belong to everyone, drawn by us from published sizes. We match sizes, never trace another maker’s outline.
- Nessmuk: George Washington Sears, Woodcraft (1884)
- Kephart: Horace Kephart, The Book of Camping and Woodcraft (1906)
- Other patterns: blade, handle and height checked against two to four published production specs each.
Fonts
Barlow Condensed, Public Sans and IBM Plex Mono, under the SIL Open Font License, served from our own site.
